Soon to be knocking on your door -- ANC candidates begin petition process
You're in a hurry to enter the grocery store. But some of those people with clipboards asking for your signature want to be your Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner. They’re asking for your support so they can, for no money, spend two years and vast amounts of time in meetings, conversation, and reading large documents about zoning, social service programs, health, police protection, sanitation, and recreation so that they can advise the District government about issues impacting you. Not surprisingly, there are not yet any competitive races for Georgetown ANC 2E commission seats.
Below are the candidates (also incumbents) who have picked up petitions.
- 2E01 ED SOLOMON
- 2E02 RON LEWIS
- 2E03 BILL SKELSEY
- 2E04 AARON L. GOLDS
- 2E05 BILL STARRELS
- 2E06 TOM BIRCH
- 2E07 CHARLES F. EASON, JR.

Philly Pizza – a toaster or a pizza oven?
The Philly Pizza saga continues. Readers will remember the Potomac Street takeout that attracted top District officials to support for Georgetown neighbors who had fought a long organizing, expensive regulatory battle to shut it down for trash, noise, zoning and other violations.
“We listened to our Georgetown residents and it was clear this business was not being a good neighbor,” Mayor Adrian Fenty said at a March press conference. He was joined by Ward 2 resident Attorney General Peter Nickles and Department of Consumer Regulatory Affairs Director Linda Argo. The ever-feisty Nickles compared the Philly Pizza closure decision to shuttering to closing brothels and used car lots.
However, owner Mehmet Kocak has not given up. He applied for a sandwich and prepared food shop in the old storefront, one that would feature, according to Marty Sullivan, the lawyer for the neighbors, a 3-foot.-by-3-foot conveyor oven that would heat food at 550 degrees for ½ hour. This is not the warming-of-prepared-food in a toaster or microwave contemplated in DCRA’s regulations. “In two great leaps” the owner is trying to turn a toaster into a toaster-oven into a conveyor-oven, and “still call it a toaster,” said Sullivan.
A recent meeting at DCRA clearly demonstrated the careful consideration being given this application. The participants included Kocak and his lawyer, the neighbors and their lawyer, Commissioner Starrells, DCRA Director Argo and a lawyer from Attorney General Nickles’ office
Bill Starrells, who represents the community on the Advisory Neighborhood Commission, remains adamantly opposed to this application. “A flower shop, yes, but this is a lousy spot for a restaurant,” he said. “This guy has burned his bridges.”

Democrat, Republican, Other? Monday last day to change voter registration for primaries
Current registered voters who want to change parties before they vote in District’s September 14th primaries must do so by 5:00 pm August 16th. Call it a glitch in the new D.C. voting regulations that allows same-day voting for never-before-registered residents -- the new law prohibits already-registered voters from switching party affiliation on primary day.
The D.C. Board of Election and Ethics states:
Voters who would like to change their party have until next Monday, August 16 to visit www.dcboee.org and download, print and sign a new voter registration application. The Board will be open for voters who want to change their party in person from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. (D.C. BOEE is located at 441 4th Street, NW, Suite 250 North Washington, DC 20001)
Of the three major parties -- Republican, Democrat and D.C. Statehood Green – only the Democrats have multiple candidates vying to represent their party in the general election. The Republicans will have no candidate for mayor on their ballot. D.C. Statehood Green party members can vote for bugle-blowing, frequent candidate Faith for mayor. All voters can write in candidates.
Longtime Republicans, independents and D.C. Statehood Greens have been known to switch party affiliation to participate in the Democratic primary which usually determines who will run the city. In Washington, 75.32% of the total 436,669 voters are registered as Democrats.

You too can vote for your favorite cupcake
The Georgetown Metropolitan provides a fabulous comparison of the attributes of Georgetown Cupcakes and those of Baked and Wired. GM says long lines and tourist distract, generosity with icing can be a pro and size does matter. Make sure you go to the bottom of GM’s post and vote for the cupcake of your choice.
GM says:
Yesterday’s morning post discussed a neighbor’s ostentatious show of loyalty for Baked and Wired steps away from Georgetown Cupcake’s notorious line of customers. It’s a heated issue around town, and it seems to GM that most Georgetowners come down pretty clearly on one side or the other.
On the Georgetown Cupcake side, you’ve got a couple pretty strong points:
- The cupcakes are nearly as nice to look at as they are to eat
- The flavor variety is pretty incredible
- They’re aspirational
